Under Indio's Unified Development Code Section 3.02.10, front-yard fences in residential and mixed-use zones are limited to three feet, with one extra foot (four feet total) only if the part above three feet is at least 50 percent open. Side and rear fences may reach six feet, or seven feet with a lattice top.
Indio is an incorporated city in Riverside County's Coachella Valley, so the City's own zoning rules apply within city limits, not Riverside County's. In 2022 Indio replaced its old Chapter 159 zoning with a form-based Unified Development Code (UDC), effective October 22, 2022. Fence and wall heights are set in UDC Section 3.02.10 (Fences, Walls, and Screening) within Chapter 3.02, General Site Development Standards for All Zones. In residential and mixed-use zones the front-yard maximum is three feet; an additional foot (four feet total) is allowed only where all fencing above three feet is at least 50 percent open or transparent, preserving sight lines. In side and rear yards the maximum is six feet, with one additional foot allowed (seven feet total) where the portion above six feet is lattice or similar non-solid material. These limits apply to single-family residential zones, which in the UDC carry names such as DE-1, DET-3, SN-4, and SN-8 rather than the traditional R-1. Heights are also constrained near street and driveway corners by the traffic-safety visibility area in Section 3.02.06. Because exact limits can vary by zone and lot location, the City advises confirming with the Planning Division before building.
Fence height is enforced by the City of Indio Community Development Department (Planning Division). A fence or wall exceeding the zone height limit, or one that blocks the required corner visibility area, can be cited as a zoning violation and may have to be lowered or removed. The City recommends contacting the Planning Division to confirm the height allowed at your specific location before construction.
