Johns Creek caps fences and walls at eight feet from grade in residential districts. Columns and ornamental features may rise up to three feet above that maximum. The rule is set by Section 4.11.E of the city Zoning Ordinance and applies citywide regardless of whether a permit is required.
The City of Johns Creek regulates fence and wall height through its own Zoning Ordinance (Appendix A to the Code of Ordinances), Section 4.11 'Fences and Walls.' Subsection E states: 'Fences and walls shall not exceed a height of eight feet from grade in residential districts. Column and ornament heights are permitted to exceed the maximum fence/wall height up to 3 feet.' Unlike many Georgia cities that split front-yard and rear-yard limits, Johns Creek's published standard is a single eight-foot maximum across residential yards, with decorative columns and post caps allowed to reach roughly eleven feet. The eight-foot limit is measured from existing grade, so building a fence on a berm or wall does not lawfully add height. Different rules apply to nonresidential and large-scale commercial development: under Section 4.4.3, fences adjacent to a public street in large-scale retail developments may not exceed 55 inches from finished grade. Pool barrier fences carry their own minimum and maximum (see fence requirements). Homeowner-association covenants are private agreements separate from the city code and may impose stricter limits, so owners in deed-restricted neighborhoods should verify both. Always confirm the current text, because the ordinance is amended periodically.
Fences exceeding the eight-foot height are zoning violations enforced by the Community Development Department and may require removal or lowering; building along a right-of-way without a required permit can trigger a stop-work order and citation.
