Larimer County, CO Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Larimer County fence rules are administered by the Community Development Department under the Land Use Code (authority CRS §30-28-111) and Building Code amendments to the 2021 IRC. A building permit is required when a fence exceeds 7 feet in height AND has a solid wind-impermeable surface (wood, masonry, vinyl, or chain-link with privacy slats); fences below that threshold are permit-exempt regardless of material. Section 4.9.2 of the Land Use Code restricts fences in required street and road setbacks to a maximum of 8 feet. The absolute maximum residential fence height is 9 feet. The Larimer County Engineering Department reviews any fence located in a regulated floodplain or one that may impact traffic sight clearances on a public road.
