Medina, OH Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Section 1155.01(c) sets a table of "Fence Height Limits and Exceptions" that varies by zoning district and by which yard the fence runs through. In the R-1, R-2, R-3, and R-4 residential districts, and in mixed-use districts with a residential use, front-yard fencing is limited to three feet, and fencing along a side street lot line is also capped at three feet, while side yard and rear yard fencing may reach six feet. Commercial districts (C-S, C-1, C-2, C-3) allow taller side and rear fencing, up to ten feet, and the I-1 industrial district and O-C/P-F districts allow up to eight or ten feet depending on the yard.

The table carries footnoted exceptions. A fence may rise to eight feet if the top two feet are less than fifty percent opaque and the Planning Director approves the design, or if the fence sits fifty feet or more back from the street right-of-way. Barbed wire up to twelve inches may be added atop a fence. On corner lots, a fence set back fifteen feet or more from the side street lot line can reach six feet outright; one set back less than fifteen feet can still reach six feet with Planning Commission approval if the Commission finds it does not obstruct pedestrian or vehicular visibility. Double-frontage lots may use a six-foot fence in the yard opposite the home's front facade. Every fence needs a permit obtained before construction begins, with a fee set under Chapter 1108, and materials are restricted to traditional fencing like wrought iron, chain link, treated lumber, cedar, redwood, or PVC, kept in weather-resistant condition.
