Full Breakdown

Under Mobile's Unified Development Code, a fence or wall that blocks sight cannot top 3 feet inside a required front yard. Move past the front yard and the ceiling jumps to 8 feet, except where the city's historic-district design review guidelines set a different limit. Corner lots get an extra rule: on a site whose rear neighbor faces the side street, sight-obstructing fences in the required side yard are also capped at 3 feet.

Violations & Fines

Fences and walls fall under the fence/wall permit and inspection fee in Sec. 11-34; general code violations are penalized under Mobile City Code chapter 1.
