City of Mosinee Code Sec. 42-788 caps fences, walls, hedges, and shrubbery at 6 feet above ground level in residential areas. Corner side yards are limited to 3 feet, and an 8-foot maximum applies along lot lines adjacent to nonresidentially zoned property. Front yard fences must be decorative only, no more than 50% opaque, and capped at 4 feet (decorative post caps may add up to 12 inches). A 3-foot vision-clearance limit applies within 25 feet of any street intersection. Building permits are required for fences.
Sec. 42-788 of the Mosinee City Code governs fences and hedges and is administered through the city's building permit process under Wis. Stat. Sec. 62.23 zoning authority. The code defines a fence as any enclosed barrier of vegetation, wood, stone, or metal, including hedges and shrubbery, and classifies fences as boundary, protective, or architectural/aesthetic. Boundary wood fences must sit at least 3 feet from any property line; chainlink boundary fences must sit at least 1 foot from any property line. No boundary fence may sit within 5 feet of an alley or within any required corner side setback or front yard setback. The general height cap is 6 feet above ground level for residential property, 3 feet in any corner side yard, and 8 feet along a lot line adjacent to nonresidentially zoned property. Nonresidentially zoned property abutting a residential lot line is also capped at 8 feet. Within 25 feet of any street intersection (or street lines projected) in a residence district, fences, walls, hedges, and shrubbery may not exceed 3 feet above the nearest street grade. Front yard fences in residence districts must be decorative only, no more than 50% opaque, set back at least 3 feet from the front property line and 3 feet from any driveway, and limited to 4 feet in height (post caps may project up to 12 inches). Chain-link, wire-mesh, and privacy fences are prohibited in any required front yard, and day-glow paints or colors are not permitted on front yard decorative fences. Fences in or adjacent to residential property require a minimum 3-foot setback. The finished side of a fence must face outward, with posts, poles, and bracing facing inward. Wisconsin's partition-fence statutes (Wis. Stat. Chapter 90, including Sec. 90.03 and Sec. 90.05) also apply to shared boundary fences.
Building or maintaining a fence in excess of Sec. 42-788 height limits, without the required building permit, or in violation of setback, vision-triangle, or front-yard opacity rules can trigger municipal forfeitures and an order to remove or modify the fence. Enforcement is handled through the City Clerk and Building Inspection Services; unresolved violations are processed through Marathon County Circuit Court.
