Rothschild, WI Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Village Code § 590-95 sets Rothschild's fence height and location standards by yard and by district. In any residential front or street yard, Subsection D(2) caps a fence, landscape wall or decorative post at four feet, requires it to be at least 50% transparent, and holds it back a minimum of 18 inches from the property line; the transparency rule applies only while the fence borders that front or street yard. Once the fence moves into a residential lot's interior side or rear yard, Subsection D(3) allows up to six feet.

Nonresidential districts get more height: Subsection E(1) allows eight feet everywhere except adjacent to a front or street yard, where the limit drops back to four feet, though a conditional use permit can raise that to nine feet if the taller fence does not further obstruct sightlines at intersections, is screened on its exterior side, and sits back an appropriate distance. Corner and driveway visibility is protected separately: Subsection C bars any fence, landscaping or decorative post from standing inside the vision triangle defined in § 590-85, or closer than 18 inches to a front or street yard property line, on any property regardless of district.

A narrow carve-out applies to double- and triple-faced residentially zoned lots fronting Volkman Street, Alderson Street, Military Road, Kamke Street, Lee Street, Weston Avenue, or a STH 29 frontage road, where a six-foot fence with no transparency requirement is allowed along the second street frontage, subject to an 18-inch rear-lot-line setback.
