Oneida, NY Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

City of Oneida Code § 190-21, last amended 5-5-2009 by Ord. No. 09-03, is the city's core fence standard. It bars any fence, wall or planting within the required front yard that interferes with the safe movement of vehicular or pedestrian traffic or with snow removal and storage, and it fixes two specific numbers: nothing can stand closer than three feet to any street right-of-way or sidewalk, and no fence or wall can exceed six feet in height in any front or side yard. The section expressly cross-references § 190-20A for corner lots, and that companion provision adds a sight-triangle rule: on a corner lot, except in districts where no front yard is required, no fence, wall, hedge or other structure or planting taller than three feet can be erected within the triangular area formed by the intersecting street right-of-way lines and a line connecting points 20 feet back from the corner along each street line.

That triangle rule exists to preserve a driver's view of cross traffic, so it is stricter than the general six-foot front/side-yard cap wherever the two overlap on a corner parcel. Because § 190-21 caps height only in the front and side yard, a rear-yard fence is not capped by this section's six-foot figure, though it still must clear the three-foot right-of-way/sidewalk setback if it borders a street or walk. The section was previously amended 8-7-1979 and 10-2-1979 before its current 2009 form.
