Oneida, NY Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Section 77-123 sits in Chapter 77's Article XIV, Fuel Gas Piping Systems, and applies to any liquefied petroleum gas installation on residential premises in the city. Subsection A bars undiluted LP-gas in liquid form from being conveyed through piping equipment and systems inside a building, and Subsection B prohibits vaporizing the gas with devices that use an open flame or an open electrical coil, both fire-hazard controls specific to propane's vapor-pressure behavior. Where a property uses two or more containers, Subsection C requires the connections to be arranged so a container can be swapped without shutting off the gas flow to connected equipment.

Subsection D requires containers to be designed, stored and located so they are not a hazard to the served premises or to surrounding property, a siting duty that works alongside the City's zoning and fire prevention rules. Subsection E requires the system to carry a safety device that relieves excessive pressure, discharging at a safe location, and Subsection F requires at least one accessible shutoff for the gas supply, located outside the building itself and kept in good operating condition at all times. Subsection G folds the section into the City's broader Fire Prevention Code, requiring LP-gas systems to be installed, used and maintained as that code separately requires.

This section works alongside §§ 77-118 through 77-122, which set general fuel gas piping, shutoff valve, utility service and appliance standards in the same Article XIV, and alongside Chapter 61, Fire Prevention, for enforcement of the underlying fire code.
