Pittsburg limits fence height to 6 feet in side and rear yards and 3.5 feet in front yards under PMC Title 18 zoning. Fences over 6 feet require a building permit, and corner lots have additional sight-distance triangle restrictions.
Pittsburg fence height limits are set by PMC Title 18 zoning and apply citywide in residential zones. Standard residential limits are: 6 feet maximum in side and rear yards, 3.5 feet maximum in required front-yard setback areas, and 6 feet maximum along interior side-yard fences abutting the street on corner lots (with further reductions in the sight-distance triangle at intersections and driveways). Any fence exceeding 6 feet requires a building permit, structural review, and compliance with Title 18 for allowed height in that zone (typically up to 8 feet with approval). Front-yard fencing must preserve visibility for traffic safety; solid fences cannot be placed within the sight-distance triangle at driveways and corners. Retaining walls have separate standards (see Retaining Walls). Non-residential zones (commercial, industrial) generally allow fences up to 8 feet or more depending on use. HOAs may further restrict fencing materials, heights, and colors. Fences must be constructed to code and maintained in a structurally sound, upright condition. Barbed wire and razor wire have additional restrictions discussed separately.
