Sioux Falls Zoning Code § 160.480 caps fences at 4 feet in front yards and 6 feet in side and rear yards. Corner lots fronting an arterial or collector may run a 6-foot fence in the street-facing front yard if set back at least 10 feet from the property line. A zoning permit is required for every fence regardless of height; a building permit is required only when the fence exceeds 7 feet.
Under Title XV (Land Use), § 160.480 of the Sioux Falls Code of Ordinances, residential fence heights are tied to yard location: front-yard fences may not exceed 4 feet; side and rear fences may not exceed 6 feet. Corner and double-frontage lots get a 6-foot allowance in the street-facing front yard only where the fence is set back at least 10 feet from the property line and the lot fronts an arterial or collector street. Within the 30-foot intersection sight triangle at corner lots, any fence must remain no more than 30% solid to preserve driver sight lines. Sioux Falls operates under a home-rule charter (SDCL Chapter 6-12), and the city's general police-power authority over zoning and land use is reinforced by SDCL § 9-29-1. The city's Planning & Development Services Division reviews zoning permits; Building Services reviews permits for fences over 7 feet. Sioux Falls did not directly inherit a state-level fence height statute — the state's role is limited to partition-fence rules in SDCL Chapter 43-23 (rural fence-out tradition), which do not constrain the city's residential height schedule.
Building a fence taller than the zoned limit, omitting the required zoning permit, or installing a solid fence inside the 30-foot intersection sight triangle exposes the owner to a Sioux Falls municipal code citation. Enforcement is administered by Planning & Development Services with stop-work and removal authority; continuing violations can be charged as a Class 2 misdemeanor under the city code's general penalty provisions.
