Under Sioux Falls Code §160.480, fences not over 7 feet in height require a fence permit from the Zoning Division (605-367-8254). Retaining walls under 4 feet measured from bottom grade to top of wall are exempt from building permit requirements per §150.017 (2021 IBC amendments), unless supporting a surcharge or impounding flammable liquids. In residential districts, a fence post must be secured below ground level. Barbed or razor wire is prohibited adjacent to residentially used or zoned property. Decorative features (columns, finials) may exceed the maximum height by up to 6 inches.
