Sioux Falls Β§ 160.480 regulates fence materials in residential zones. Wood, vinyl, wrought iron, and ornamental metal are permitted. Barbed wire and razor wire are prohibited when the parcel abuts residentially used or zoned property.
Under Sioux Falls Code Β§ 160.480 (Chapter 160: Zoning), residential fences may be constructed of wood, vinyl, chain-link, wrought iron, or decorative metal. Exposed wood posts, top caps, and trim boards are permitted. Barbed wire and razor wire are expressly prohibited on lots abutting residentially zoned or used parcels. Decorative post caps, brick or stone columns may exceed the maximum fence height by up to six inches. Fences up to four feet may be placed anywhere on the lot; fences up to six feet are permitted in side and rear yards. A zoning permit is required for most new fences under Β§ 160.705.
Unpermitted or prohibited-material fences are subject to code enforcement action and civil penalties; continued violations may result in mandatory removal at owner's expense.
