Springfield, OR Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Table 4.4.1 sets a 6-foot base fence height in every front, side street and rear yard across the Residential, Commercial, PLO and Medical Services districts in the City of Springfield, Oregon. Industrial parcels get 6 feet in the Campus Industrial District and 8 feet in every other industrial district under subsection (C)(3). Height is measured from the average grade next to the fence, or from the top of a berm if the fence sits on one. Inside the front yard setback, a homeowner may still build a 4-foot unslatted chain link fence or a 3-foot sight-obscuring fence under subsection (C)(2), though the 4-foot chain link option does not apply to multiple unit housing.

Fences can reach 8 feet for public utility facilities, school yards and playgrounds, and for residential lots backing utility facilities, railroad tracks, or streets carrying 4 or more travel lanes, provided the fence stays behind the front and street side landscaped strip and out of the vision clearance area. A 10-foot fence is allowed where a residential lot abuts a commercial or industrial district along a shared line, or around a permitted storage area, though a single-unit dwelling's own yard never counts as permitted storage.

Any residential fence inside a required setback that exceeds its allowable height by more than 20 percent needs Type 3 review. No fence anywhere in the city may pass 2.5 feet within the vision clearance area set by SDC 4.2.130, protecting sightlines at corners and driveways.
