Amarillo regulates fence height and placement through its Zoning Ordinance. Front-yard fences are capped at 4 feet; rear and side fences may reach 8 feet. The code restricts certain hazardous materials such as barbed wire in residential zones.
Amarillo Code of Ordinances Β§ 4-10-267 (Division 7 β Fences and Walls, Chapter 4-10 Zoning) sets height limits: residentially developed lots may erect fences up to 4 feet between the front property line and the nearest sidewalk edge, and up to 8 feet behind the required front-yard setback line. Barbed wire and electrically charged fencing are prohibited in residential districts. Fences must not obstruct sight triangles at intersections. Permits are required for fences over 6 feet. Building Safety enforces compliance.
Unpermitted or non-compliant fences are subject to a notice of violation; failure to correct triggers fines up to $500 per day per Amarillo general penalty provisions.
