Grapevine prohibits razor wire, concertina wire, and barbed wire in residential fences. Electric fences are restricted to commercial and agricultural zones. Chain link is limited in pool and front-yard applications.
Grapevine's zoning ordinance restricts several fence materials in residential districts. Razor wire and concertina wire are prohibited in all residential zones regardless of height. Barbed wire is prohibited on residential fences under 8 feet and discouraged even on tall fences; agricultural zones with grandfathered barbed wire may retain it. Electric fencing (shock wire) is prohibited in residential zones; commercial and industrial security fencing can be electrified under permits with clear warning signage. Chain link fencing is allowed in most residential rear and side yards but is restricted in front yards on some zoning classes and is prohibited as a new pool barrier under ISPSC. Temporary construction fencing (orange plastic, chain link panels) is allowed during active permitted construction. Metal panel fences, wrought iron, ornamental steel, cedar wood, pressure-treated pine, redwood, and vinyl are common approved materials. The Main Street historic district has additional design review requirements administered by the Historic Preservation Commission, which typically requires traditional materials (painted wood, wrought iron) and discourages vinyl or modern synthetic materials. HOA covenants commonly restrict materials further.
Class C misdemeanor; up to 500 dollars per day. Prohibited materials can be ordered removed.
