Kent allows wood, vinyl, metal, and composite fencing in residential zones. Barbed wire and electric fencing are restricted to industrial and AG zones. Razor ribbon needs an industrial CUP under KCC 15.08.
Kent City Code 15.08 does not rigidly dictate approved fence materials in residential zones but restricts hazardous materials based on zone. In R-1 through R-8 residential zones, common materials including cedar wood, vinyl, aluminum, wrought iron, composite, and chain-link are all permitted subject to the 4-foot front and 6-foot side-rear height limits. Barbed wire is not allowed below 6 feet in residential zones; in industrial zones it may top a 6-foot fence with strand wires extending above. Electric fencing for pet containment is not permitted in residential zones except for invisible (underground) dog-containment systems, which are allowed as long as visible warning signage is posted. Razor ribbon and concertina wire are restricted to industrial zones serving critical infrastructure with a conditional use permit. Temporary orange construction or silt-fencing on active permit sites is exempt. HOAs may further restrict to specific materials or colors (commonly cedar board-on-board or tan vinyl) under private covenants.
Unauthorized barbed wire or razor ribbon in a residential zone is a zoning violation; Code Enforcement can order immediate removal and issue civil fines.
