O'Fallon, MO Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

273(D)(1) lists acceptable fencing materials as brick, stone and other masonry, synthetic materials, natural and treated woods, wrought iron, decorative aluminum and chain link, with PVC and other synthetic fencing required to meet the Section's own quality standards. Chain link is limited to residential and industrial zoning and cannot be used on commercially zoned property. 273(D)(2) then bans barbed wire, razor wire, hardware cloth, wire mesh and electrified fencing outright, with one narrow exception: barbed wire may top a security fence in an industrially zoned area if the fence is at least five feet, six inches tall, the owner has obtained a conditional use permit under Chapter 400, Article VII, and the barbed wire is supported vertically or tilted inward toward the property it protects, not outward toward a neighbor or the street.

273(D)(3) requires repairing, painting, removing or otherwise addressing any fence that becomes unsightly or a safety menace, and the Administrative Officer can issue a compliance notice giving the owner fifteen days to fix it, though a longer window is available at the Administrative Officer's discretion for genuine hardship cases.
