Sun Prairie, WI Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

200(C)(1) sets Sun Prairie's fence material standard, applying to any fence, landscape wall or decorative post 30 inches tall or taller under subsection B. a permits wood, stone, brick, wrought iron, chain link and wire mesh generally, but carves out one restriction: chain link or wire mesh fencing is not permitted within a required front yard or street yard. The only exception is replacing an existing chain link fence around an existing school playground, which the zoning administrator may approve if all other fencing standards are met.

b: the same list of acceptable materials applies with no front-yard exclusion, and barbed wire fencing is affirmatively permitted on security fences, but only where the fence stands at five and a half feet (66 inches) or taller. Below that height, barbed wire is not authorized even on commercial or industrial security fencing.
