Bayonne, NJ Fence Regulations: Fence Permit Requirements (2026)

Bayonne's construction fee schedule lists a distinct Fence Permit fee under Section 15-3.1a(6) for any fence built over six feet high, charging $75 for up to 50 feet of fence, $90 for 51 to 100 feet, and $200 for anything over 101 feet. That permit trigger lines up with the zoning limits in Section 35-4.14: in residential districts, fences and walls on a side or rear property line cannot exceed six feet, front-yard fences are capped at four feet, and corner-lot fencing is limited to six feet for half the lot depth near the entrance and 36 inches along the remainder to preserve sight lines.

Barbed wire is barred outright in residential districts. Commercial fences may run up to 10 feet on side and rear lines but drop to four feet of decorative fencing along a street frontage, and industrial fences may reach 12 feet, including any barbed wire on top. Only one border fence is allowed per parcel, and Section 35-4.14 requires the property owner to remove an existing border fence and its supports before installing a new one. Every fence must be installed with its finished side facing the street or the neighboring property.
