Lakewood, OH Fence Regulations: Permit Requirements (2026)

Chapter 1153 PERMIT REQUIRED provides that, pursuant to LCO 1306.62, a permit must be obtained prior to installing a new fence, replacing a fence, or modifying the location, height, material, type, style, or other changes not considered a repair of any existing fence; the Building Commissioner may set permit conditions to ensure conformance. The City's Fence Packet states that fence repairs less than 8 total feet in length do not require a permit. Required submittals are: a Building Permit Application, a site plan (birds-eye view showing property lines, existing buildings, existing fence, and proposed fence), a signed 'Owner Acknowledgement of Property Line' form, and a neighbor notification letter mailed to abutting owners. When installing a new fence, the proposed line must be marked with string on temporary posts at least 5 calendar days before the permit is issued so the City can verify the string line is present (the City does not verify the legal boundary). If a contractor does the work, they must be registered with the City of Lakewood and are responsible for obtaining the permit.
