Pools >24 in deep require 48-in (4 ft) barrier per IRC Appendix G, adopted via GA Amendments. Self-closing, self-latching gates opening outward. Permit required from Gwinnett Planning & Development.
Gwinnett enforces IRC 2018 Appendix G (adopted via GA Amendments) for residential pool barriers. Any pool with water >24 inches deep β including above-ground pools, inflatable pools, and spas not covered by approved safety covers β must have a barrier at least 48 inches high, measured from finished grade outside. Gaps between vertical slats cannot exceed 4 inches; horizontal members must be spaced 45 inches apart or smooth/unclimbable. Gates must be self-closing, self-latching with latch β₯54 inches from ground, and open outward from the pool. Above-ground pools with ladders that can be removed/locked meet the barrier requirement if walls are 48+ inches tall. A pool permit is required (typically $150-$300).
Permit violation: stop-work order and fines up to $1,000/day. Missing/inadequate barrier: closure order and child-safety risk citation.
