Walls are regulated like fences under UDC 9.5.2(D): eight-foot maximum, transparency limits in front/corner side yards, and setbacks from streets and sidewalks. Any wall over eight feet requires engineered, wind-rated design.
The UDC treats walls together with fences. A wall may be a maximum of eight feet, and a wall over four feet in a front or corner side yard must be less than 30 percent solid unless matching walls already exist in the subdivision. Walls containing more than 50 percent exposed standard concrete masonry blocks are not allowed, whether painted or not. Walls must be at least 15 feet from the edge of any street (five feet along alleys) and five feet from the backside of any sidewalk, and may not sit in a drainage, utility, or similar servitude without consent. Walls over eight feet in height require professional engineering and design for the applicable wind speed.
Non-compliant or unpermitted walls are enforced by the Permit & Inspection Division; engineered stamped plans are required before permitting walls over eight feet.
