R404.4 Retaining walls. Add the following to the end of the section: As an alternative, retaining walls may be built per Alternative 4 listed in the amendment of Section R403.1.6 with a six (6) foot dead man placed for lateral support at each end of the unsupported wall and at the spacing shown. The retaining wall must be drained per Figure 405.1 or equivalent.

Columbia adopted the 2018 International Residential Code for One- and Two-Family Dwellings at City Code § 6-65 and amended R404.4 at § 6-66, giving Boone County's county seat an engineering alternative for retaining walls: a wall may be built with a six-foot dead-man for lateral support at each end of the unsupported run and at the spacing shown, so long as it is drained per Figure R405.1 or an equivalent design. Separately, UDC Table 4.1-5 lets lot-boundary retaining walls run up to the property line without encroaching on the right-of-way or a neighbor's land without consent.
