San Diego, CA Filming & Production: Production Noise (2026)

Film productions in San Diego are subject to the city's noise regulations under San Diego Municipal Code Section 59.5.0401. Amplified sound (bullhorns, speakers, playback systems) and generators used on location must not exceed residential noise limits of 50 dBA between 10 PM and 7 AM or 60 dBA during daytime hours, measured at the nearest residential property line. Film permits include conditions regarding noise based on the production plan submitted. Productions using pyrotechnics, blank gunfire, helicopter flyovers, or loud special effects must note these on the permit application and provide advance notification to neighboring properties (typically 48-72 hours). The Film Office coordinates with SDPD community relations to manage neighborhood concerns. Generator placement should be as far as possible from residential properties, with sound blankets or baffles recommended. Night filming (after 10 PM) in or adjacent to residential zones is subject to additional restrictions and may require neighborhood notification and written consent.
