Lee's Summit, MO Fire Regulations: Brush Clearance (2026)

Lee's Summit does not run a standalone wildfire or brush-clearance ordinance; the vegetation-height standard that keeps overgrown lots from becoming a fire hazard is Sec. 4. It limits weeds and plant growth to 10 inches on any premises or exterior property citywide and prohibits noxious weeds outright regardless of height, without a separate fire-risk finding required. The rule reaches undeveloped ground as well as yards: a large contiguous undeveloped tract over 10 acres not divided by a public road is otherwise excused from the cap, but the code still requires the 50 feet nearest an adjoining road or a neighboring residential or commercial property to be kept under 10 inches, precisely the buffer zone where uncontrolled growth would most threaten structures or roadways.

Once the Codes Official documents a violation and serves notice, the property owner or agent must cut and destroy the growth; if they don't, city personnel or a hired contractor may enter the property, cut the vegetation, and bill the owner or agent for the cost, independent of any court fine. Chapter 16 cross-references chapter 13 (fire prevention and protection), so a property with dense dry brush can also draw attention from Fire Prevention staff, but the enforceable numeric standard and abatement mechanism for the growth itself sits entirely in Sec. 16-203, not in a separate fire chapter.
