Fire pit rules in Provo, UT β also called outdoor burning, recreational fire, or open flame ordinances β cover fuel types, clearances, and when burning is allowed.
Provo Fire & Rescue allows backyard recreational fire pits under guidelines that cap the pit at 3 feet in diameter and flames at 2 feet, require a non-combustible surround, and keep fires 25 feet from structures and combustibles per the adopted International Fire Code (Provo City Code 9.51).
Provo adopts the International Fire Code in Provo City Code 9.51.010, including IFC Section 307 governing recreational fires. Provo Fire & Rescue's published Recreational Fire Pit Guidelines apply those standards locally: a fire pit may not exceed 3 feet in diameter, flames may not exceed 2 feet in height, below-ground pits must be at least four inches deep, and the pit (above or below ground) must be surrounded by a non-combustible material such as steel, brick, or masonry. Under IFC 307.4.2, a recreational fire must be at least 25 feet from any structure or combustible material, and conditions that could let fire spread within 25 feet must be eliminated before lighting. Only seasoned firewood may be burned (no trash or yard waste), and fires must be attended and fully extinguished. During hazardous environmental conditions the city may suspend recreational fires entirely under Utah Code 15A-5-202.5(1)(b). Residents are directed to call Provo Fire & Rescue at (801) 852-6321 with questions.
A fire pit that exceeds the size limits, lacks the required non-combustible surround, or is closer than 25 feet to a structure violates the adopted International Fire Code (Provo City Code 9.51) and Provo Fire & Rescue may order it extinguished, issue a fire-code citation, and pursue cost recovery if the fire escapes.
