Fire pit rules in Redlands, CA โ also called outdoor burning, recreational fire, or open flame ordinances โ cover fuel types, clearances, and when burning is allowed.
Redlands has no separate fire-pit ordinance; backyard fire pits are governed by the 2022 California Fire Code, which the City adopted in Chapter 15.20. Recreational fires must stay at least 25 feet from structures, and manufactured portable outdoor fireplaces must stay at least 15 feet away.
The City of Redlands adopted the 2022 California Fire Code by reference in City Code Section 15.20.010, so backyard fire pits and chimineas are regulated under the statewide Fire Code rather than a stand-alone City rule. Under California Fire Code Section 307, a 'recreational fire' (an outdoor fire burning clean wood for pleasure, cooking, or warmth) must not exceed 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height and must be kept at least 25 feet from any structure or combustible material, with conditions that could allow the fire to spread eliminated before ignition. A manufactured 'portable outdoor fireplace' (a store-bought fire pit used per the manufacturer's instructions) may be used closer, but not within 15 feet of a structure or combustible material. A constant means of extinguishment -- a hose, fire extinguisher, dirt, or sand -- must be available, and fires may not be left unattended. Note that gas and propane fire pits are generally preferable because South Coast AQMD 'No-Burn' alerts (Rule 445) prohibit wood and solid-fuel burning, including outdoor fire pits, on declared days during the winter season. Foothill properties in the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone should exercise extra caution and follow any seasonal restrictions issued by the Redlands Fire Department.
Enforced by the Redlands Fire Department under the adopted California Fire Code. The Fire Code official may order any unsafe or non-compliant fire extinguished. Violations of the AQMD No-Burn rule (Rule 445) are separately enforceable by South Coast AQMD.
