St. Lucie County, FL Fire Regulations: Fireworks (2026)

County Code § 28-52 defines "fireworks" broadly: any combustible or explosive composition or device meant to deflagrate or detonate, including firecrackers, torpedoes, skyrockets, roman candles and blank cartridges or toy cannons using explosives. 025 grains or less of explosive compound, and specific novelty noisemakers such as snakes/glow worms (10 grams or less pyrotechnic composition), smoke devices (10 grams or less), party poppers and booby traps (16 milligrams or less), and snappers (4 milligrams, 250 milligrams total sand/composition). Section 28-53 sets the operative rules: manufacturing fireworks anywhere in the county is prohibited outright, and selling fireworks is unlawful except as the section allows.

A wholesaler registered and licensed with both the state fire marshal and the county may sell fireworks as state law permits, but only from a permanent commercial building on land zoned commercial or industrial; the building must carry automatic fire sprinklers and alarms meeting NFPA occupancy standards, and sales from tents, open-air stands or under a canopy are unlawful. Possessing, using or exploding fireworks at any public assembly is unlawful unless the county fire district first approves and authorizes it. Retailers and seasonal retailers, defined separately as those selling sparklers June 20 through July 5 and December 10 through January 2, remain subject to state sparkler licensing even though sparklers themselves fall outside the fireworks ban.
