Iowa Code §727.2 (HF 540, 2017) legalized consumer fireworks but lets counties limit use to July 3, July 4, and December 31. Linn County Resolution 2019-5-83 (updated June 17, 2025) restricts consumer fireworks in unincorporated areas to those three dates only, in narrow time windows.
Iowa Code §727.2 allows the use of consumer fireworks but authorizes county boards of supervisors to prohibit or limit use on any day other than July 3, July 4, and December 31. The Linn County Board of Supervisors adopted Resolution 2019-5-83 (updated June 17, 2025 to align with SF 303) restricting consumer fireworks in unincorporated Linn County to: July 3, 9 a.m.-10 p.m.; July 4, 9 a.m.-11 p.m.; and December 31, 9 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. on January 1. Property owner permission is required. Fireworks are banned on county property and in county parks. Display fireworks require a county permit (two-week review, no fee). Penalties under Iowa Code §727.2(2)(b)(1) and (3)(c)(1) include a simple misdemeanor with a fine of not less than $250. Cities within Linn County set their own rules.
