Mason County, WA Fire Regulations: Fireworks (2026)

Mason County Code Chapter 14.19, Sale and Discharge of Fireworks, channels the county's regulatory authority through a single fire marshal's office permit. Section 14.19.030 requires anyone who wants to import, manufacture, transport, possess, store, sell or discharge fireworks in unincorporated Mason County to first obtain a permit from the fire marshal's office, department of community services, with narrow exceptions for state-exempt agricultural or wildlife fireworks and for private discharge of consumer fireworks during the state's authorized windows. Applications for a public display or retail sales permit must reach the fire marshal by 4:30 p.m. on May 15, or the preceding Friday if that date falls on a weekend, and display permits must be submitted at least ten business days before the event.

Retail applicants must carry at least $1 million in single-limit public liability, bodily injury and property damage insurance naming Mason County as an additional insured, and Section 14.19.030 confines retail sales to temporary structures in zones where commercial or industrial activity is authorized. Public displays must be run by a state-licensed pyrotechnic operator under Section 14.19.040. Separately, Mason County Code Section 9.44.060 bans possessing or discharging firecrackers, rockets or any other fireworks in county parks, on county-owned real property, or on property held in trust, allowing only professionally conducted, licensed and bonded pyrotechnic displays approved by the local fire district and fire marshal.

The Mason County sheriff's office and fire marshal enforce Chapter 14.19, may seize fireworks held or used in violation, and can revoke a permit for any violation of the chapter, RCW 70.77, or WAC 212-17.
