Consumer fireworks are legal for adults across St. Joseph County, and under Indiana Code 22-11-14-10.5 no county or city ordinance may ban their use on the days around July 4 or on New Year's, or before 11 p.m. on ordinary days.
Indiana has some of the most permissive fireworks laws in the country. Any adult may buy and discharge consumer fireworks on their own property or on another's with permission. St. Joseph County and cities like South Bend and Mishawaka may restrict the days and hours of use, but Indiana Code 22-11-14-10.5 protects windows no local ordinance can touch: June 29 through July 9 from 5 p.m. to two hours after sunset, July 4 from 10 a.m. to midnight, and December 31 into 1 a.m. January 1. Outside those windows, general use runs 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Discharging fireworks outside the hours a local ordinance allows is a Class C infraction; reckless use that causes injury or property damage can bring criminal charges.
