West Bloomfield, MI Fire Regulations: Fireworks (2026)

Section 11-38 of the Charter Township of West Bloomfield Code of Ordinances adopts the Michigan Fireworks Safety Act, MCL 28.451 to 28.471, by reference and layers local ignition rules on top of it. Consumer fireworks may be ignited, discharged, or used only after 11 a.m. on specific windows: December 31 until 1 a.m. on January 1; the Saturday and Sunday before Memorial Day until 11:45 p.m.; June 29 through July 4 until 11:45 p.m. each day; July 5 until 11:45 p.m. if it falls on a Friday or Saturday; and the Saturday and Sunday before Labor Day until 11:45 p.m.

Outside a township-board permit under Section 16 of the Act, any other date and time is off-limits. Consumer fireworks can never be ignited on public, school, church, or another person's private property without that owner's express written permission, never by someone under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance, and never by a minor under eighteen, who may not even possess them. The fire chief, a uniformed firefighter under the chief's direction, or the state fire marshal can impose a temporary no-burning restriction, including a fireworks ban, during extreme fire-danger conditions or after seventy-two consecutive hours of very-high danger, lifting it within twenty-four hours once conditions improve.

Violating any part of § 11-38 is a municipal civil infraction capped at $1,000 per violation, and $500 of every fine collected is remitted to the enforcing law enforcement agency. Fireworks used in violation, and any related sales, are also subject to seizure.
