Santee, CA Fire Regulations: Outdoor Burning (2026)

Section 11.18.020 of the Santee Municipal Code adds Section 307.4.4 to the California Fire Code, titled '"Red-flag" and Other High Fire Risk Conditions.' It shuts down open burning outright, naming recreational fires and fires inside portable outdoor fireplaces specifically, for the entire time a red-flag warning or fire weather watch condition is in effect from the National Weather Service; the ban isn't tied to a City-issued permit or a particular device, it turns on the weather alert itself. The provision sits alongside a companion street-parking restriction added at the same time: Section 503.3.1 lets the Fire Code Official prohibit on-street parking during red-flag conditions in areas identified as a fire hazard severity zone, so evacuation routes stay wide enough when a side street would otherwise narrow below the standard in Title 14, Section 1273.01 of the California Code of Regulations.

Both rules are enforced by the Office of the Fire Marshal, created as the Fire Code's 'fire code official' under Section 103.1, and both amendments took effect with the rest of Chapter 11.18 under Ordinance 629, adopted December 10, 2025. A resident or contractor who thinks a particular burn doesn't fall under the ban can raise that with the Fire Marshal, and any adverse decision goes to the City Council on a written appeal filed with the City Clerk within thirty days.
