Baytown, TX Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Section 38-67 of the Baytown Code of Ordinances sets the geographic limits for several fire-code storage restrictions adopted with the International Fire Code in section 38-61. 2, which restricts bulk storage of liquefied petroleum gas, are the corporate limits of the city as they now exist or are later changed by law. In practical terms, this means Baytown has designated its entire incorporated area as the district in which bulk LP-gas storage is limited under the adopted fire code, rather than confining the restriction to an industrial zone.

Subsection (b) separately requires any aboveground tank storing flammable or combustible liquids outside a building to comply with NFPA 30A, be fire-resistant enough to survive a two-hour UL 2085 fire-exposure test without releasing liquid, and not be used at a retail service station. The fire marshal enforces the fire prevention code under section 38-63, and violations are punishable under the general fire-code penalty in section 38-64, plus the editor's note attached to Ordinance No. 00 per violation, with each day of continued violation a separate offense.
