Propane storage in Jurupa Valley follows 2025 California Fire Code Chapter 61 (Liquefied Petroleum Gases), adopted by JVMC Ch. 8.10. Small residential tanks up to 125 gallons water-capacity are exempt from permit but require minimum setbacks from buildings, lot lines, and ignition sources; larger tanks require a Riverside County Fire Department operational permit.
Jurupa Valley adopts the 2025 California Fire Code by reference in JVMC Ch. 8.10. CFC Chapter 61 (Liquefied Petroleum Gases) and NFPA 58 (Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code, incorporated by reference) govern installation and storage. Key residential thresholds: portable barbeque-grill cylinders up to 1 lb may be transported or stored inside (CFC §6109.11); but no more than three propane cylinders of 1 lb to 20 lb capacity may be stored inside a residential occupancy (CFC §6109.4). Outside storage on a one- or two-family residential property of cylinders up to 20 lb is permitted without a fire permit but must be at least 3 feet from any window, door, or air intake and protected from vehicle damage. Stationary tanks 125 gallons water-capacity or less for residential domestic use are exempt from CFC §105.5 operational permit but must comply with NFPA 58 setbacks: a 125-gal tank must be at least 5 ft from any building, line of adjoining property, and source of ignition. Tanks larger than 125 gallons water-capacity, and any commercial LPG storage, require an operational permit from Riverside County Fire Department / CAL FIRE per CFC §105.5.30. Vehicle-mounted DOT cylinders on motorhomes and forklifts are regulated separately.
CFC Ch. 61 violations are enforced by Riverside County Fire Department / CAL FIRE as adopted by JVMC Ch. 8.10. Common citations include over-storage of cylinders indoors, tanks set too close to buildings or property lines, exchange-cabinets blocking exits, and missing protection bollards. Fire Code Official may order immediate removal of out-of-compliance storage. Operating commercial LPG storage without the required permit is enforceable as a misdemeanor under the adopted Fire Code.
