Putnam County, FL Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Putnam County Code § 45-110(1) treats propane tanks the same as air conditioning compressors, solar panels, water softeners and generators for placement purposes: this accessory equipment may be located in a required side or rear setback in any zoning district, but never closer than five feet to any lot line, and it is barred entirely from the required front setback. A site plan demonstrating compliance with those distances must be submitted for the equipment, giving Planning and Development Services a check before installation. The same subsection draws a hard line at bulk storage: once propane held on a property equals or exceeds a total of 2,000 gallons, it is deemed bulk storage of a toxic and/or flammable substance and requires a special use permit where allowable, rather than being reviewed as ordinary accessory equipment.

In the commercial and industrial zoning districts, the county can also require additional screening and buffering for propane and similar accessory equipment under article VII, division 3 of the Land Development Code, layering a landscaping requirement on top of the setback and bulk-storage rules for tanks serving nonresidential uses.
