29 to require a fire department operational permit for the storage and use of LP-gas anywhere in the city, and separately for operating cargo tankers that transport LP-gas. The ordinance builds two exceptions into the permit trigger. First, individual LP-gas containers with a water capacity of 500 gallons or less, or multiple container systems with an aggregate capacity up to 500 gallons, are exempt from the permit when they serve a Group R-3 occupancy, meaning a single-family home, duplex, or similar small residential building. Second, LP-gas containers connected to a grill are exempt up to 48 pounds water capacity, roughly a standard 20-pound propane cylinder, but that exemption disappears the moment the grill is set up at a public assembly, placed on a public way, or used for a commercial purpose, at which point the operator must obtain a permit before storing or using the gas.
