Walker County, GA Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Walker County's zoning code sorts land uses into categories, and LP gas storage and distribution sits in the "public service" category alongside utility facilities and emergency-service buildings, capped at 1,000 gallons of stored liquefied propane. Cross the 1,000-gallon line and the same code reclassifies the facility as "industrial" instead, which matters because the two categories are allowed in different zones under the county's use table, § 22-148: public service uses are allowed in the A-1, R-A, Chickamauga Battlefield Overlay, C-1, CN, I and PUD districts, but are prohibited outright in the R-1, R-2 and R-3 residential districts.

Industrial uses, by contrast, are allowed only in the I district and prohibited everywhere else, including A-1. In practice, that means a small commercial propane distributor with a tank of 1,000 gallons or less can locate in an agricultural, rural residential-agricultural, or commercial zone as a public service use, but a distributor with a larger tank has to relocate to the county's industrial district instead. The Planning Director makes the initial use-classification call for any use not specifically listed, guided by the county's comprehensive plan.

This is a zoning-classification rule governing where a commercial LP gas storage or distribution business may operate in unincorporated Walker County, not a fire-code limit on the size of a homeowner's own propane tank for a grill or home heating.
