Florida Statute 553.883 governs smoke alarms in Escambia County homes. Homes and townhomes undergoing a repair or Level 1 alteration may use 10-year sealed-battery smoke alarms instead of rewiring. The Florida Building and Fire codes require alarms in each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level.
Smoke-alarm requirements in Escambia County are set by statewide Florida law, not a separate county ordinance. Under F.S. 553.883, one-family and two-family dwellings and townhomes undergoing a repair or a Level 1 alteration may install smoke alarms powered by a 10-year nonremovable, nonreplaceable battery instead of retrofitting hardwired alarms. Since January 1, 2015, any newly installed or replacement battery-powered smoke alarm must use a sealed 10-year battery. The Florida Building Code and Florida Fire Prevention Code (NFPA 72/101) require smoke alarms inside each sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every story, including basements. Carbon-monoxide alarms are separately required near sleeping areas in new construction with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages. These are minimum life-safety standards applied statewide;
Smoke-alarm compliance is enforced through building-permit inspections and the fire code; permits will not final without required alarms, and landlords must maintain working alarms. Missing or disabled alarms found on inspection must be corrected. There is no separate Escambia County
