Greenwood, IN Fire Regulations: Smoke Detectors (2026)

Section 6-152 of the Greenwood General Ordinances requires the owner of every new and existing dwelling unit to install smoke detectors, and Section 6-153 sets the placement standard: at least one detector for each sleeping area and each floor level, mounted outside the bedroom but near the sleeping area, and never in dead air space where a ceiling meets a wall. Detectors in one- and two-family homes existing when the rule passed may be battery-powered, plug-in, or direct-wired under Section 6-154(b), while detectors installed under other circumstances must be wired directly to the building's power under Section 6-154(a).

Class I structures and any structure substantially rehabilitated under a building permit must meet the stricter installation standards of Indiana Code Section 22-11-18 and NFPA 72E, referenced in Sections 6-152(d) and 6-153(d). Section 6-152(c) also bars selling or trading residential property in Greenwood unless the seller has installed the required detectors, or placed enough money in escrow for the buyer to install them. Under Section 6-155, an owner of a one- or two-family residence must keep every detector in reliable operating condition and test it at least once every six months, while Class I structure owners must have their detection devices tested annually by a service company and file a copy of the results with the Fire Prevention Division.
