Under Sec. 26-907.9.1 of the Fire Prevention and Protection Code, every single-family and two-family dwelling, apartment house, and sleeping room in a lodging house or hotel in Kansas City must have an operable smoke alarm. In most bedroom units the alarm goes on the ceiling or wall centrally located in the corridor giving access to sleeping rooms; in efficiency units and hotel rooms it must be centrally located on the ceiling of the main room, or near the top of the stairway if sleeping areas are on an upper level. Sec. 26-907.9.2 splits maintenance duty: owners must provide an approved fire warning system, owners must maintain it in lodging houses, hotels and vacant units, and occupants must keep the smoke alarm in their own unit operable.
