Linden, NJ Fire Regulations: Smoke Detectors (2026)

A. 13: any mixed-use occupancy with residential use above or attached to another use must have smoke detectors hard wired into every common area and hallway, and those detectors must be interconnected so that when any one activates, they all sound. That interconnection requirement is the operative feature: a battery unit inside a single hallway segment does not satisfy the amendment, because the code requires all common-area and hallway detectors in the building to sound together, giving residents on every floor warning regardless of where the fire starts.

The amendment sits among a cluster of local fire code amendments enforced by the Fire Official and the Fire Prevention Bureau, alongside separate rules on heat-producing equipment clearances, key boxes for locked buildings, and reporting of vacant structures, all adopted the same way, as amendments not more stringent than the Uniform Construction Code and not less stringent than the Uniform Fire Code. Linden's Fire Prevention Bureau checks for compliance as part of its routine fire-safety inspections, and enforcement, violations and penalties for the fire code generally are handled under the Uniform Fire Safety Act and Uniform Fire Code rather than a separate municipal fine schedule specific to this amendment.
