Milwaukee Code Chapter 214 requires working smoke alarms in every sleeping area and on every floor, plus interconnected hardwired alarms in new construction and major remodels.
Milwaukee enforces the Wisconsin Uniform Dwelling Code and local Chapter 214 fire prevention rules requiring smoke alarms inside each sleeping room, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of a dwelling. Alarms must be photoelectric or dual-sensor and under 10 years old. Rental properties inspected by the Department of Neighborhood Services must show compliance at every inspection. Tenants may request a free smoke alarm from the Milwaukee Fire Department Smoke Alarm program by calling 414-286-8980. Carbon monoxide alarms are required under Wis. Stat. 101.647 within 15 feet of each sleeping area.
Missing or expired smoke alarms are Chapter 214 orders carrying fines of $150 to $1,000 per violation at reinspection.
