Royal Oak, MI Fire Regulations: Smoke Detectors (2026)

Section 340-2 of Chapter 340, Fire Prevention, amends the adopted 2015 International Fire Code by adding Section 907.2.11.2.1, which requires that smoke alarms, whether single-station or multiple-station, be 'installed and maintained in corridors, hallways, and all common areas of occupancies in Use Groups R-2 and R-3.' Use Group R-2 covers multi-family buildings such as apartments and condominiums, while R-3 covers other residential occupancies not covered elsewhere, so the requirement targets the shared spaces of multi-unit housing rather than the interior of individual single-family homes. The same Section 340-2 amendment package also requires, under Section 907.4.2.4, that any building whose fire alarm system is not monitored by a supervising station post a permanent sign reading 'THIS ALARM DOES NOT NOTIFY THE FIRE DEPARTMENT - TO REPORT A FIRE DIAL 911' next to every manual fire alarm box, and under Section 908.8, that any installed building fire alarm system monitor emergency alarm systems in accordance with NFPA 72.

Compliance is enforced by the Fire Official under the Fire Code adopted in Section 340-1, and property owners of R-2 and R-3 buildings are responsible for installing and maintaining the required corridor and common-area alarms.
