The state Fire Marshal issued updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps covering Menifee in March 2025. Owners in Very High zones must keep 100 feet of defensible space, meet home-hardening and wildland-urban-interface building standards, and disclose the designation when selling.
On March 24, 2025, the California Office of the State Fire Marshal issued the 2025 Recommended Local Responsibility Area Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps for Riverside County, and Menifee posted a city-specific map showing parcels designated Moderate, High, or Very High based on terrain and topography, vegetation and fuel conditions, fire history and frequency, and climate and weather patterns. State law requires local agencies to adopt the recommended LRA maps by ordinance within 120 days of release. In Very High zones, owners must maintain 100 feet of defensible space around structures, the standard set by California Government Code Section 51182(a)(1)(A), which requires defensible space of 100 feet from each side and from the front and rear of the structure, but not beyond the property line. Owners in High and Very High zones must also comply with home-hardening requirements, follow wildland-urban-interface building codes for new construction and renovations, and disclose the FHSZ designation when selling. Menifee Municipal Code Section 8.20.170 addresses fire hazard severity zones within the city's fire code chapter.
Defensible-space and weed-abatement violations in designated zones draw administrative citations and forced abatement with costs billed to the owner, and Government Code Section 51182 obligations apply to owners in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones; sellers who fail to disclose an FHSZ designation face state real-estate disclosure liability.
