Pasadena's northern neighborhoods directly border the Angeles National Forest and San Gabriel Mountains, placing them in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. The 2009 Station Fire, the largest fire in Los Angeles County history, burned 160,577 acres in the mountains directly above Pasadena, threatening foothill homes and causing devastating post-fire debris flows. The Eaton Fire (January 2025) burned over 14,000 acres and destroyed more than 9,400 structures in Altadena and nearby areas. Pasadena requires Chapter 7A fire-resistant construction in VHFHSZ, enhanced defensible space up to 200 feet, and participates in the Arroyo Seco fire management program.
