Porterville, CA Fire Regulations: Wildfire Zones (2026)

The City Council adopted the WUI Code by Ordinance 1921, effective December 2, 2025, under Porterville Municipal Code section 7-1(A), which lists the 2025 Wildland-Urban Interface Code, Title 24 Part 7, among the state codes enacted for the city "to all intents and purposes and to the same effect as if each and every sentence, paragraph, word and clause in said codes...were fully and specifically set forth herein" (section 7-1(B)). The city added no local changes: section 7-3 states there are no local amendments to the 2025 codes, though the Council reserves the right to amend them later by ordinance after a public hearing.

In practice, new construction, additions, and reroofs on parcels within a state-designated fire hazard severity zone inside city limits must meet the ignition-resistant materials, vent, eave and roofing standards written into the adopted WUI Code, reviewed the same way as any other building permit. The Public Works Director, acting as Building Official under section 7-3.5, administers and enforces all city codes tied to building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and solar work, including WUI compliance during plan check and inspection. A structure built, altered, or maintained out of compliance with the adopted WUI standards is a building code violation under section 7-3.4, punishable the same as any other building code offense.
