New Britain, CT Food Trucks & Mobile Vendors: Sidewalk & Mobile Vending (2026)

Once an itinerant vendor has a Public Way Green Zone or private-property permit, Sec. 14-224 sets the day-to-day operating rules. Subsection (j) requires the truck to open and serve customers only from the sidewalk-facing side and bars operating with the service window open to the roadway, protecting pedestrians from having to step into traffic to order. Any generator or amplified sound used at the truck must comply with the noise rules in chapter 16, article V. Power for the truck must be self-contained; no power cable or equipment may be run at grade across a city street, alley or sidewalk.

The truck cannot use external signage, bollards, seating or any equipment not built into the vehicle itself, and it may not have a drive-through. Operators must post their valid vending permit and any required licensing paperwork at the location and must prominently display the owner's name and address on the vehicle. Carts and trucks cannot be left unattended or stored in the vending spot when they are not actively serving or during restricted hours. Permits for a designated food truck area are handed out first-come, first-served until the maximum number of vendors is reached, and any vendor wanting to work inside a city park needs pre-approval from the New Britain Parks and Recreation Department on top of the vending license.
