New Britain, CT Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Section 240-50-40, most recently amended April 30, 2025 (Item #36738-3), prohibits parking in the required front yard of the city's core single-family and two-family districts except inside a single driveway with a maximum width of twenty feet. Section 240-60-40, added October 21, 2025 (Item #36885-3), backs it up as a catch-all: unless Section 240-50-40 already applies, front yard parking is prohibited for any property used solely for residential purposes unless it sits within a driveway, or driveways, that together do not exceed twenty feet in width.

Both sections carry the same grandfather clause: a front yard paved parking lot that existed before the section's effective date and does not conform may keep operating in its original configuration, but it cannot be enlarged or reconfigured. Section 240-60-50 caps how much of a street-facing property line can be curb cut at forty percent, which limits how wide a driveway apron can be built even before the twenty-foot on-lot limit applies. Section 240-60-20 separately requires every driveway entrance or exit to keep a minimum unobstructed width of ten feet, rising to twenty feet for a combined entrance and exit serving more than ten parking spaces.

The Director of Licenses, Permits and Inspections enforces these limits under Section 280-30-10 and can require a nonconforming gravel or grass parking area to be brought into compliance or removed.
